Like every year Sonal, my daughter is after me to buy woollen threads of different colours so that she can make friendship bands for her friends and teachers. And like every year I persuade her not to make so many bands, not to waste so much money and not to spend so much time unnecessarily without studing ( how I would know the importance of these events when we never had these in our times). And guess what ? I have to give in like every year and follow her suit.<br /> This year, it started with a trip to ` Cheap Jack' , our nearest stationary shop which has all kinds of nitty gritty to appease these youngsters' eyes. With a lot of fuss she finally decided the colours of the wool she wanted to make the friendship bands. Once back at home she immediately started off with her crochet and needdles and begged my involvment in this project. As a dutiful mother , I had to give in and started the proceedings. But to my amazement , I could not recall the initial procedure of knitting. I tried again and again hoping my mother would be around to help me out . Finally , after a long trial, I could sow a beautiful friendship band. Here, I felt , instead of me helping my daughter in her job, she made me memorise the old art of crochet. This is the power of a girl child. Where as my son, Saswat, went straight out and bought his own collection of friendship bands.<br /> There are a lot of things the daughter in a household can do which a son cannot. For example , she might help you memorise the cooking recipe which you have long forgotten, decorate the house according to the latest trends, buying the fashionable cosmetics , which the mother otherwise will never buy or a trip to a local beauty parlour . Still , apart from the rural areas, in modern societies there is always a preference for a male child. There are wide reports of female infanticide in the rural areas of Northern India. It is a pity, neither the government nor the society is doing anything about it.
